Italy is one of the most densely populated (>200 people/km2) and artificially covered (<41% of total area is natural) country in Europe. The reasons are manifolds: pre-existing civilisations and infrastructure, periodical economic growths and unplanned development.
However the Italian geography largely varies, and in many areas it is unsuitable for urban development, resulting in an uneven distribution and extension of the human settlements.
Builtaly is an investigation on the urban patterns of the Italian regions and their future development trends.
With the support of geostatistical models we developed a series prediction maps to identify where and how cities will expand or shrink and what the most influencing factors are.
The prediction is elaborated through a forest-based classification model and takes into account variables like the current economic situation, the recent urban development trends and geographical conditions.
